Rhinoplasty ( Nose Surgery)

The nose is one of the most defining characteristics of the face. While the nose finishes development relatively early in life, many individuals do not become acutely aware of nasal abnormalities until indicated to them in societal settings. Aside from traumatic injuries many individuals with nasal asymmetry my recognize these as something the wish to change during their teenage years or into early adulthood. Fortunately, the majority of undesirable nasal characteristics can easily be addressed with surgical procedures. This procedure is known as rhinoplasty and can be performed in many variations: open, closed, with osteotomies, without osteotomies, with tip work, without tip work…. you get the idea.

What is Rhinoplasty Surgery

When it comes right down to it each nose is different and after many rhinoplasties Dr. Green often tells patients that the surgery itself is not hard, but ensuring that he and the patient have the same nose in mind prior to surgery is absolutely crucial! Learning to envision what the patient wants their nose to look like and what is achievable takes years of experience. In most cases the desired outcome is quite reasonable and patients are overwhelmingly happy with their results!

Why do we have this large object with tons of nerve endings sticking off our faces anyway?? Many people have struggled to answer that questions and perhaps its just the way we were made, but the nose is not all about looks that’s for sure. The nose serves in the crucial function of breathing and moistening the air coming in and out of the body. Dr. Green often combines aesthetic and functional goals such as improved breathing into the same surgical procedure. If you have concerns about your breathing as well as the appearance of your nose please bring this up in your consultation with Dr. Green!

With these goals in mind, Rhinoplasty is the process of reshaping the bones and cartilage of the nose to both optimize aesthetics and in some cases improve breathing.

Types of Nose Surgery

As mentioned above, reasons for having a nose job may include reducing the size of the nose, removal of bumps as well as improving the angle of a nose. Conditions may be natural or due to external trauma to the face. In some cases rhinoplasty can be performed with no external incisions at all, but in many cases a small nearly imperceptible incision under the nose is used for access.  As mentioned, nasal surgery can also be designed to help patients who have difficulty breathing. The operation can be performed on all age groups, including teens and the elderly.

Rhinoplasty Before and Afters

Dr. Green speaks, lectures, and teaches and is constantly taking high quality photographs of our patients for these purposes. While Dr. Green take’s great pride in the product of his work the majority of Dr. Green‘s photo galleries are maintained in the office and are available for all our potential patients for review.

Rhinoplasty anesthesia

Surgery is usually performed under IV sedation or General anesthesia, which is both extremely comfortable and results in less swelling and bruising than general anesthesia. In most cases involving a reduction in shape or size of the nose, angle or removal of a hump, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying skeleton of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped and the skin re-draped over the surface. Patients who have a deviated septum may benefit by correction of this problem. The incisions are placed inside the nose, unless the surgeon uses an open approach, in which case the incisions are made across the tissue between the nostrils. In cases where the nostrils flare, the surgeon may make an incision at the junction between the nose and the skin of the upper lip to narrow the flared appearance. It is not unusual to combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation to improve the profile.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people resume their normal activities within a week. Depending on the details of what your surgery requires the post operative dressings may very slightly but all dressings are removed at the 1 week follow up visit. In most cases, following surgery, a lightweight splint is applied to maintain the new shape of the nose. Internal nasal splints may be inserted at the time of surgery to protect the septum. These are removed within a week. There is always some stuffiness of the nose, especially when work has been done on the nasal septum.

Pain is minimal and is controlled with medications. Bruising can occur around the eyes, but begins to fade within a few days. Discoloration usually disappears in two weeks.
